BENEATH

BENEATH
Series of 4”x 6” lenticular postcards, mail correspondence

2013-2015

In the subtle progression of flora that marks the seasons of North Florida, the small spikes of delicate betony flowers that dot suburban lawns, herald spring. Many in their quest for the perfectly manicured lawn view Florida Betony (Stachy Floridana) as a stubborn turf pest due to its rhizomatic root structure of white bulbous and segmented tubers resembling the tail of a rattlesnake, hence its other moniker—Rattlesnake Weed. Still others consider betony’s edible tubers delicious in salads, pickles and stir-fry and as a potential source of semi-digestible sugar that promotes friendly gut bacteria and inhibits harmful pathogens that cause pneumonia and vaginal infections.

The network of roots that characterize betony’s penchant for subterraneous growth inspired me to contact Floridians (scientists, native plant specialists, healers, cooperative extension agents) who have a professional relationship with Stachy Floridana> inviting them to share their perspective via postcard correspondence. These lenticular flip postcards evidence a conversation about our cultural relationship with this ubiquitous crop/weed/native plant, inviting the audience to ponder the nature beneath our feet as we walk across our lawns on the way to the mailbox.

GREEN LINING?

GREEN LINING? wall piece with portable DVD players in wooden "specimen boxes"
3 videos duration, 1:15, 3:14, 1:14
2010

Slash and burn land clearing in Florida provides an optimal habitat for edible weeds. green lining? documents the tragedy, irony, and possible redemption of these landscapes. Rampant land development—condominiums, churches, and subdivisions—marks/mars the Florida landscape and is part of the ongoing history of the state. Before the current economic recession marked the end of the real estate boom, developers cleared land at a breathtaking pace, forest and ranch land one week, strip mall and suburban homes the next. Bulldozers, fire, and herbicide destroy entire ecosystems. Next, a road replete with a cul-de-sac is etched into the landscape, followed by hydrants and signage purposing the land into sale-able lots. With the recession, the cleared land is left to its own devices, providing a habitat for edible weeds and creating a "green lining" in light of the greater destruction.

UNION

STATE OF THE UNION 2003: STATE OF THE UNION 2007 Video documentation of performance on portable DVD player

n State of the Union 2003: State of the Union 2007, I diagram sentences, a grade school technique for visually parsing grammar, as a way to demonstrate the changes and contradictions in US foreign policy with respect to the war in Iraq over time. I diagram the sections of President Bush's 2003 address that have to do with preparing the American people for the war in Iraq and then attempt to erase and reinsert the language from his 2007 State of the Union Address that discusses the Iraq war into the framework of the 2003 Address

UNDERSTANDING

PLACE OF UNDERSTANDING?
2'x2' on wall and 4'x1'x1' pedestal
2006

I asked about the plants that I saw on the side of a crater while I was in riding in the back of a truck in Ecuador. A woman who farmed the land adjacent to the national park read the landscape almost as if it was a text. In this piece I explored how landscapes become differentiated and both understood and misunderstood through narrative and translation. Three simultaneous translations flow across the screen: the first is my attempt to tell the stories in Spanish that I heard in Spanish from the woman farmer. The next line of text is how a native speaker of Spanish understood my telling of the story and the third line of text is how I understand and tell the story in English.

2005

I am totally fascinated by the citrus industry in Florida and the mythical qualities that people from other parts of the US attribute to orange juice, especially in the winter. I examined the places of distribution and the journeys of orange juice—both real and imagined—through video and visual personal narrative. Video of Tropicana's huge distribution warehouse, fruit stands catering to tourists, supermarkets, smaller distributors of organic juice, me gleaning oranges from a local park, as well as other yet uncovered venues of juice distribution are projected onto a jug of orange juice. Viewers drink the juice and watch the video.

Video installation, food, performance, lots of oranges and juice
2005

Orange juice is the ubiquitous morning drink of North America. Orange juice has the power to turn B&W video to color, make the sun rise, and spare a person from drinking calcium-rich cocktails of pureed sardines, turnips and other cruciferous vegetables. Employing relational art strategies as portals to civic engagement, Agent Orangerie explores our collective unexamined relationship towards orange juice, inviting people to play with the materiality of what constitutes commercial orange juice as a metaphor for the dislocation between our received notion of an agriculture based on place and season rather than protocols and processes of factory farming.

COUGH

COUGH

3' x 2' x 2'
2006

Coral Street Arts House nee Beatty Mills was originally used to card bales of cotton. Copious amounts of dust were generated as a result of this process. Workers breathed in the dust and contracted brown lung as well as other respiratory ailments. In this piece, I researched the binding of the dust to the soft tissue of the lungs and the physiological manifestations of the persistent coughs of workers that I imagine resounded in that space. I chose to visualize a cough particular to the history of the space, building a sonic sculpture using light and dryer lint known for its ability to disperse dust with a minimum of movement and its resemblance to unprocessed cotton fibers

Horizon

LOST HORIZONS
walking, Google Earth, video, and panoramic photography
proposed research ongoing

Lost Horizons uses the practice of ground truthing to understand the dichotomy between the disembodied virtual space of remote sensing data/Google Earth and the lived experience on the ground, contrasting the densely vegetated, multilayered, multi-cultured environment of North Florida with the packaged, essentialized perspective of satellite imagery. Part of the quintessential Florida tourist adventure is viewing the horizon, the beach landscape at dawn and dusk mythologized by snapshots and postcards. I attempt to travel from coastal Jacksonville to Route 30 near Mexico Beach stopping at points created by the intersection of roads and the 30th parallel. The 30th parallel North has mystical significance for some as it crosses the site of the pyramids in Egypt. In Florida, it passes through upscale subdivisions in Jacksonville, bombing ranges, USAF installations, timber concessions, the occasional mine—lands that are rarely frequented by the casual passerby. At each point I walk a pixel of land, shoot video and a panoramic photo initially placing each image as VR panorama into Google Earth. The final piece will be a series of interactive postcards where the participant jumps into the postcard in GE and explores each intersection creating a "Street View" where many times one does not exist.

TRUTHING

GROUND TRUTH: PERFORMING THE PIXEL
cardboard tube, walking
proposed research ongoing

Ground truthing is the physical, on-site verification of the pixels that are transmitted via satellite as a result of remote sensing and processed into images and maps depicting particular features of a place. The experience of a place/this place, depending upon the context, could be only referenced by the pixel displaying colors representative of invisible bands of light. Political and economic decisions about a place might be made based solely on the information of the pixel. I walk a pixel of land slated for development, recording both past and emergent narratives of those places soon to be undergoing dramatic changes. I seek a practice that compares information of the actual locale with the compressed version of the pixel to create hybrids of scientifc and local subjectivities, at times working collaboratively with others, where the ground truth of the pixel supports the notion and practice of local authority and resists the narrow band of information assigned to it.

COMMUTE: DITCH

COMMUTE: DITCH
video projection on sand, audio
20' x 16' x 8'
2004-2006

I researched the flat monotonous agricultural landscape that I commuted from my home to university, 80 miles away by traveling to and from school in a variety of ways paddling, biking, walking, etc. In commute: ditch, I kayaked from Champaign, IL to Springfield, IL. My 88 mile route took me through the region's water infrastructure: creeks, sloughs, drainage ditches, man-made lakes, and the Sangamon River. 150 years ago, the Sangamon River was the waterway that Lincoln and other pioneers traveled from northeast to southwest central Illinois. Now the river is little used and in many places not easily navigated. commute: ditch is poetic meditation of the experience of the "invisible", but ubiquitous water systems that we take for granted in our daily lives.
